What are some of the best romantic movies of all time?

What are some of the best romantic movies of all time, you ask? Well, that’s a completely subjective question, so it’s probably better to ask, ‘what are some of your favorite romantic movies of all time?’ The list of films that fit into this genre is long and varied, but quite a few stand out as popular favorites amongst moviegoers.

The most obvious to grace this list is probably Titanic. There’s really no arguing that this a truly great film, and it’s quite rare when a movie actually lives up to all the blockbuster, Hollywood hype. Leo and Kate were great in this film, so it makes many top-ten lists for good reason.

Another film that makes many lists is ‘The Notebook‘, which was directed by Nick Cassavetes. The film stars Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gossling, both of whom are usually great in anything they appear in. This one will tug at your heartstrings, just a bit.

Many people don’t think of ‘Forrest Gump‘ as a romance flick, but Gump’s undying adoration for Jenny firmly puts it on the list. This was an original screenplay, to be sure, and helped cement Tom Hanks’ reputation as an A-list actor. It’s a rather long film, but the storyline moves along a rather swift pace.

I guess if I have to include a personal favorite, that doesn’t often find its way into most people’s favorites, it would have to be ‘Joe Versus the Volcano.’ This was the first pairing of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who would eventually team up to make such romantic classics as ‘You’ve got Mail‘ and ‘Sleepless in Seattle.’ What I like about ‘Joe‘ is the symbolism, and all the great cameos by some pretty impressive actors as well.

What are the best romance movies in your opinion? That’s what really matters. It’s an oft overlooked genre of film-making, and they are often just called chick flicks.
